Read Aloud

In Read Aloud you see a short text, prepare briefly, then read it aloud clearly and fluently into the microphone before the progress bar ends.

Repeat Sentence

In Repeat Sentence you hear a short sentence once and must repeat it as accurately and fluently as you can immediately after.

Describe Image

Describe Image gives you an image or chart and limited prep time, then you speak continuously about what it shows until the recording ends.

Re-tell Lecture

Re-tell Lecture plays an academic talk or audio-visual lecture once; you then retell the key points in your own spoken words within the time limit.

Answer Short Question

Answer Short Question plays a brief prompt; you reply with a short, specific answer (often one word or a short phrase) right after the beep.

Summarize Group Discussion

Summarize Group Discussion (a newer PTE Academic speaking task) plays a multi-speaker discussion; you then orally summarize the key points and viewpoints.

Respond to a Situation

Respond to a Situation describes a real-life scenario; you speak an appropriate response as if handling that situation under realistic communication conditions.

How to train

A method, not a mood.

Four moves, in order. Do them in short daily sessions and the skill stops feeling random.

Build automatic fluency on Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence. These appear often and reward smooth delivery.

Train a reusable structure for Describe Image and Re-tell Lecture so you never freeze when planning time ends.

For situational tasks (Respond to a Situation, Summarize Group Discussion), practice organizing multi-speaker or scenario content without over-scripting.

Record yourself weekly and listen for hesitations, dropped endings, and monotone rhythm.

How speaking works.

Three things decide how this skill goes. Read them once, then go practise.

The format

The Speaking section is delivered entirely on a computer with a headset. You speak into a microphone; there is no human interlocutor. Tasks range from reading a short passage aloud to describing images, retelling lectures, summarizing discussions, and responding to everyday situations (in PTE Core and newer Academic formats).

How it's scored

Scores commonly contribute to both the overall Speaking communicative skill and, for some item types, to Reading or Listening as enabling skills. Exact weightings and score maps are defined by Pearson and should be confirmed on pearsonpte.com for your test version.

What gets results

Strong Speaking performance usually comes from steady fluency, clear pronunciation, and on-topic content, not from sounding “native.” Practice with realistic timers and a quiet room so your delivery matches exam conditions.
