PTE Essay Word Limit (2026): Exact Length Rules, Form Penalties & AI Scoring

On the PTE Academic Write Essay task, candidates must write a 200 to 300 word argumentative essay in response to a prompt within a strict 20-minute countdown. While grammar and vocabulary are important, violating word count boundaries carries severe automatic penalties that can invalidate an entire essay attempt.

Official Form rubric: word count boundaries

• 200 to 300 words: 2 out of 2 points for Form (Full credit).
• 120 to 199 words: 1 out of 2 points for Form.
• 301 to 380 words: 1 out of 2 points for Form.
• Fewer than 120 words OR more than 380 words: 0 out of 2 points for Form. Under Pearson scoring guidelines, receiving 0 for Form can result in zero overall credit for the task.

The ideal sweet spot: 220 to 260 words

Aiming for exactly 201 words leaves no room for editing errors, while writing 295 words risks accidental overrun. The recommended length is between 220 and 260 words. This length allows you to fully develop your introduction, two body paragraphs, and conclusion while leaving 3 to 4 minutes to proofread spelling and punctuation.

The 20-minute essay timeline

1. Minutes 1 to 2 (Planning): Identify the core topic, decide your position (agree or disagree), and write down 2 supporting arguments with concrete examples.
2. Minutes 3 to 16 (Drafting): Write your 4-paragraph structure (Introduction, Argument 1, Argument 2, Conclusion). Monitor the real-time word counter at the bottom of the screen.
3. Minutes 17 to 20 (Proofreading): Stop typing new ideas. Check for subject-verb agreement, capitalisation at sentence starts, apostrophes, and spelling accuracy.
