PTE Core is the test for economic PR
PTE Core is accepted for all economic PR categories, which makes it the PTE test that matters for Express Entry and its provincial cousins. PTE Academic is a different test with a different acceptance list, and it does not substitute for PTE Core in the categories that name PTE Core. The conversion works one way: each of your four skills is mapped to a CLB level, and the category you apply under sets the minimum level it will accept.
The mapping also explains why scores land unevenly: a report that clears CLB 7 in listening can still miss it in writing, and the category counts the weakest skill, not the average.

Which CLB floor does your category need
There is no single magic number. Express Entry ranks candidates with points that rise with each CLB band, and the category you apply under sets the minimum band you must clear before you are eligible at all. The 2026 category reshuffle
In 2026 IRCC reshuffled its category-based selections: new categories now target doctors, researchers, senior managers, and transport occupations, the agriculture category was removed, and candidates in the French, healthcare, and education selections now need at least one year of work experience to qualify under their category. The CLB 5 fallback
Some programs accept a lower bar. CLB 5 works out to roughly 51 in speaking, 39 in listening, 42 in reading, and 51 in writing in PTE Core. Frame it for what it is: an eligibility floor that gets a profile considered in a few narrower programs, not a competitive score. A report sitting at CLB 5 can clear a minimum and still rank far below candidates in the CLB 7 and 8 bands, so aim at the floor your category actually asks for.

The CLB 7 floor is deliberately uneven: listening and reading clear at 60, while speaking asks 68 and writing 69.
