Not all questions in the PTE exam are created equal. One of the biggest preparation errors candidates make is distributing study time evenly across all 22 question types. In reality, a small subset of four high-weight tasks accounts for over 60% of the entire exam's communicative points due to Pearson's integrated scoring model.

The Big 4: high-impact tasks that make or break your score

• Repeat Sentence (Speaking): Contributes roughly 30 to 35 points to Speaking and 20 to 25 points to Listening. It is the single highest-yield item in the entire test.
• Write From Dictation (Listening): Contributes roughly 25 points to Listening and 20 to 25 points to Writing. Missing words here can ruin an otherwise solid writing score.
• Read Aloud (Speaking): Contributes approximately 22 points to Speaking and 22 points to Reading. Clear pronunciation and rhythm here directly build your reading foundation.
• Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks (Reading): Contributes around 22 points to Reading and 22 points to Writing. It is the decisive task for securing Reading 65 or 79.

Tier 2: essential supporting tasks

• Describe Image (Speaking): Approximately 18 to 22 points to Speaking. Highly responsive to template preparation.
• Re-tell Lecture (Speaking): Contributes roughly 12 to 15 points each to Speaking and Listening.
• Summarize Spoken Text (Listening): Contributes 10 to 12 points each to Listening and Writing.

Tier 3: low-yield tasks (do not over-invest study time)

The following tasks contribute minimally to your overall communicative scores (often fewer than 2 to 4 points total): Answer Short Question, Multiple Choice Single/Multiple (Reading and Listening), Select Missing Word, and Highlight Correct Summary. Spending hours memorising trivia for Answer Short Question produces negligible score improvement.

The 80/20 study plan based on weightage

1. Allocate 60% of daily practice time to the Big 4: Repeat Sentence, Write from Dictation, Read Aloud, and Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks.
2. Allocate 25% of time to Tier 2 tasks: Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, and Summarize Spoken Text.
3. Reserve the remaining 15% for timed sectional practice and mock review.
