PTE mock test strategy

How to use full PTE mocks (Academic & Core): timing, post-mortems, how many to sit, and why free mocks on Wobzzy should feel like exam day.

Wobzzy Editorial · PTE preparation ·

Drills build skill. Full mocks build exam behaviour: stamina, timing, and emotional recovery after a messy item. If you only ever practise single question types, test day will feel longer and louder than you expect.

What a mock is for

  • Rehearsing the real sequence and section energy, not hunting a predictive score.
  • Finding where you run out of time or click Next too fast.
  • Stress-testing speaking under fatigue, not only when you are fresh.
  • Practising Save & Exit logistics only if your platform supports resume; on test day, know the real rules of your booking.
Wobzzy full mock tests are free forever: same philosophy as unlimited drills. Optional AI scoring is separate paid feedback, not required to sit a mock. Not affiliated with Pearson.

Rules that make mocks honest

  1. Same time of day as your booked exam when possible.
  2. Headphones, mic, and a clear desk: no tab hopping for answers.
  3. No pausing mid-section to check notes. If you must stop, note that the mock is partial.
  4. Finish even after a bad speaking item. Recovery is part of the skill.

The post-mortem (30 minutes, written)

A mock without review is mostly fatigue. After a break, write briefly:

  • Timing: which sections felt rushed or oddly empty?
  • Blanks: any item left incomplete by accident?
  • Speaking: restarts, dead air, or rushing at the end of prep time?
  • Two behaviours to change before the next mock: only two.

How many mocks?

Enough to learn your patterns, not so many that you memorise your own practice content. Early prep: one diagnostic mock. Mid prep: roughly one per week if you have weeks to spare. Final stretch: one or two under strict conditions, then taper so you are not exhausted the day before the real test.

Between mocks

Return to drills for the behaviours you named. If Write From Dictation collapsed late in the test, add short WFD sets at the end of study sessions when you are tired. If speaking faded in part 1, do a small speaking block daily rather than one long weekly binge.

Sit a full mock free on Wobzzy and practise the whole arc, not just your favourite item types.
